Ninja Tune has hit the jackpot when it comes to British hip-hop. D.S.P. are one of the hip-hip acts on the hottest and hippest labels going and they bring a lot to the table. DSP are Jonny Cuba and the Loop Professor who have both been longtime contributors to the British hip-hop scene. In The Red is their sophomore album and is a dark album with most of the music being in minor keys and the rhymes are fast and diverse. D.S.P. stands for Dynamic Syncopation Productions and that’s exactly their main motive: syncopation that is extremely dynamic. Cuba and the Loop Professor make use of many guest MC’s throughout the album but Loop manages to keep everything fit together. A problem with many rap albums with guest MC’s is that they end up broken and fractured. More like a compilation album than the works of one group. D.S.P. keeps it going and keeps everything fresh. They like to funk it up like Jurassic 5 on tracks like “The Living and “Bullshit. One of the best tracks is “My Verse 1st with Phi-Life Cypher. They sometimes reach back to old school rapping styles but that’s when it was an art form. This is the shit.
