Hangin Freud is Paula Borges (vocals) and Jonathan Perez.(other) and together they have created something singularly beautiful and yet menacing. Ghostly wails, seductive sighs and monotone intonation all combine in an astonishing vocal performance that is deceptively amateur and yet completely riveting. Paula Borges vocals are stylised yet natural and she seems to sing the songs that the woman from Room 237 would have sung&if she were alive. It is easy to let yourself be overwhelmed by her voice, but without the correct setting it may have amounted to little or nothing. Perezs production is nothing short of revelatory, seamlessly working harsh glitch, shimering drones and skeletal acoustic instrumentation together into something that defies genre and age.
Sunken is a rare achievement, a truly timeless album that, as one early reviewer said &You could live inside forever which is why it is such a tantalizing listen, clocking in at just under half an hour. This is the Reign In Blood of an as yet unnamed or undiscovered genre, and when it finishes you will be left feeling drained but rejuvenated, intimidated but encouraged, wistful but utterly sated. The album will be available on tape and CD from Daddy Tank Records on May 2nd.
