One of the most influential blues guitarists of the twenties and thirties, Son House had in many ways a life typical of the delta blues artists of the day. With one exception - unlike Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson, Son House was a deeply religious man and lived his life accordingly. Not for him, the whiskey and women of many of his contemporaries. This does not mean to say that he did not consider love and sex in his music, but the style he chose for it is substantially different than many. "My Black Mama" is the better of these songs and it deals with the love of a man and a woman against the backdrop of the hard life of blacks in the Mississippi Delta in the twenties and thirties. To our ears it sounds poorly produced and lacking in depth, but for its time this was as good as it got.
