Tom Petty was an artist who just completely passed me by. It has something to do with the fact that he started to emerge onto the UK scene about the same time as punk rock. As a result, he came across as a throwback to an era which was then being swept aside. Why on earth would I want to pay any attention to Tom Petty? To make matters worse, this was just good ole southern American rock, delivered with Pettys peculiar brand of nasal whine. Probably the sort of thing which fits MTV perfectly and therefore something I should hate. But oh, that wonderful looping guitar!
