The Police produced a string of good singles during the late seventies. For some reason (probably the fact that cash was limited in those days as a poor student and I could rarely afford to buy a whole album), I always saw them as a singles band, hence the reason I have none of their albums but about six of their singles. "Roxanne" was a classic in its own right. It had the typical Police reggae influenced guitar and Sting's rather plaintiff vocal line. It was a song about a girl who walks the darker side of life, much to her boyfriend's disgust. As with "Can't Stand Losing You", The Police often, in their early years, sailed close to the edge of what was acceptable in the mainstream, and this may explain why this single was such a success.
