Michael Franti has come a long way since his Spearhead debut Home. You might recall Franti from his Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy as well as his efforts in Spearhead. On Stay Human, Spearhead unfold a true story about Sister Fatima, a healer and activist who is to be executed for a murder her community is sure she didn’t commit. Franti does this by simulating a pirate radio station with callers calling in discussing the situation. He even manages to talk Woody Harrelson into acting as a governor talking about the death penalty. Franti plays Brother Soulshine, the station’s DJ. Stay Human ends up being more than just a rap album. Franti incorporates soul and R&B into it very nicely, as well some funk elements. This is an album that slaps you in the face and makes you realize exactly what is going on in this crazy, fucked up world we all live in. The music is some of the best that Franti has ever created complete with a strong message against the death penalty. There are some heavy rap tracks like “Listener’s Supported� which almost has a bit of a reggae feel to it. Listen closely as the story unfolds and you will be shocked that things like this actually happen.
