Once upon a time, the Thompson Twins were a good band. They offered a different perspective on music. Neither punk nor reggae, they drew inspiration from a number of sources and were not afraid of branching out into the unknown. "Animal Laugh" was just one of those songs which you knew, when you first heard it, you had to have. A traditional African song, it consisted solely of drums of various kinds, over which was chanted, in I think Sotho, a rhythmic refrain. Completely different from what was floating around the airwaves at the time, this got some airplay on the late evening Radio 1. Sadly, not many were listening. That was a shame.
