It is often the case, and no matter how unfair we may hold it to be, or rant against the unfairness of it, that those with the most talent are not always those who enjoy the most success. The Go-Gos were an immensely likeable all-girl powerpop band from the early eighties. When they split up it was lead singer Belinda Carlisle who achieved the most success. Yet it was former guitarist Jane Wiedlin who was the real creative talent behind the band.
Wiedlin did not enjoy much success after the Go-Gos. Yet "Rush Hour" is about as good a piece of enjoyable lightweight pop as you are ever likely to find. Easy on the ear and with a hook-line to die for, "Rush Hour" was as close as any of the ex-Go-Gos came to re-creating the spirit of the band. This may be one of my guilty little pleasures, but when this comes on in the car, I defy anyone not to swing their head in time with the rhythm and sing along.
