A very British, nay a very London song. And how typical of its time! But then Squeeze were masters of encapsulating contemporary British (London) life and distilling it into three minutes or so of pop pleasure. This one is about what would be termed a wide boy and his life of a bit of this, a bit of that. Great lines like "posing down the pub" and "give the dog a bone" (ask your older brother if you don't know) display the character as a rather likeable but completely untrustworthy rascal. In many ways Squeeze were reminiscent of the Kinks in their ability to capture vignettes of life and depict them in such an engaging manner.
