Heralded as the future of music in the eighties, Spandau Ballet led the way on the new romantic front. Outrageously flashy clothes, smooth style, danceable music, it soon got hijacked by the record companies. After a few singles, Spandau Ballet were turning out smooching songs for bored housewives. "To Cut a Long Story Short" was their first and their best, simply because it is their least commercial. But don't look too hard for musical inspiration here because you won't find it. Music belonged to the post punks who were excluded from the recognition they deserved because the record companies made new romantics mainstream and UK radio doesn't play anything that's not mainstream.
