One of the most emotionally charged love songs ever written, Percy Sledge does full justice to "When a Man Loves a Woman". It is also probably the best performance Percy Sledge would ever give on record in his whole career. The plaintiff sound of the vocals is enhanced by the production which seems to push the vocals further into the distance the more desperate Sledge's singing becomes. Against the vocal performance, the music seems to fade into the background and become almost inaudible, something which is surely the hallmark of excellent vocal performances. Those who claim to sing rhythm and blues today would do well to listen to this, listen in awe, then pack their own pathetic careers in.
