I fell in love with the Notwist when I personally discovered Shrink. I was very sad when I found out that their label had gone the way of the dinosaur thinking that the band would get lost in the whole deal. Apparently not because The Notwist snuck Neon Golden out into the public by way of another obscure label called City Slang. Somehow they even got a distribution deal through none other than Virgin. If you were lucky enough to find a copy of Shrink then you will be familiar with this German bands ability to weave electronic samples and beats throughout it's beautifully stated lyrics. Shrink leaned a bit on Jazz. Some tracks were very experimental. On Neon Golden Marcus Acher's vocals are the main course. There are some tracks where you have no idea where they are going but somehow always manage to put a smile on your face. The music is always happy and pleasant and on Neon Golden, The Notwist manage to not grate on any nerves. This album is already in consideration for album of the year. Really, it's that good!

Well said Solitary. This album is fantastic. Check out their previous album Shrink as well. That's what sold me on this band. This one just solidified my love for them. I just wish they would be a little more consistent with their output. 4 years between Shrink and Neon Golden? We are approaching 6 years now with nothing. Come on Notwist, let's get something else out.

I was glad to stumble upon these guys a couple years ago, and Neon Golden was my first (and favorite) album. It reminds of a more (creatively) spastic Radiohead, but that would be doing The Notwist a disservice. They've really got a sound all their own, tinny and sad sometimes and at others brimming with a nervous sort of excitement. It's clear to draw a line in the sand between them and Radiohead, but the differences stretch further down the beach.
