And now for No. 2’s number 2. What Does Good Luck Bring is the sophomore album for former Heatmiser, Neil Gust’s band. They have had quite a fun time the last couple of years opening for the likes of Sleater Kinney, Quasi, and Stephen Malkmus. Sam Coomes from Quasi makes an appearance on this album as well. The band hasn’t really changed direction much from No Memory but what we do find is Neil Gust maturing with his songwriting (I’m sure songwriters hate that “mature word but…). The songs are very diverse and show a very wide range of styles. Neil’s voice is in fine form and the band he has culminated for this outing fit perfectly. No. 2 is a band that really deserves more recognition that it is currently getting. The songwriting is stronger than most other bands in the spotlight. Maybe What Does Good Luck Bring will bring Neil Gust his long overdue luck in the music world.
