Depeche Mode were never a band who really rocked my cradle. Their first single, put out on an independent label, was pretty good, but as soon as they signed up to the mainstream, I kind of went off them. They briefly resurfaced on my radar a few years later with "Personal Jesus" but then once again disappeared. That song was certainly the best of their later output, though I will always argue that Depeche Mode were always too much a pop band to really hold my attention for too long. Here they try to be deep and meaningful, slightly depressed and downbeat, and it almost comes off.
