I have so far avoided reviewing this because I did not want to say something negative purely for the sake of it. But if UK mainstream radio is going to force me to listen to this every single bloody time I turn on the radio, then, like any product being advertised, be it toilet paper, washing up liquid or a pay day loan, then I am going to give my opinion on it. This is, after all, a product - marketed, advertised, packaged and sold like any other.
Let's face it, Rihanna is only gaining access to a recording studio because she looks shaggable and she flaunts what she has got. Her voice is mediocre level karaoke at best and after a while (namely the umpteenth repeat of umber-ella-ella-ella-ey-ey) becomes irritating. The song is trite and repetitive, revolving as it does around a deliberate mispronunciation and some dubious double-entendres (ask any Barbadians you know what "umbrella" means).
Why bother. Another wailing diva with nothing to recommend. Another dreary hook line from the musical factory. Rihanna will be used until she no longer serves a purpose. Then in five years time it'll be Ri-Who applying for a job at the checkout tills at Tesco. Single of the year? Ha! I've had more entertainment listening to paint dry.
