David Gates could write a good lyric when he had a mind to. It is a pity therefore that he could also write some atrocious drivel. Thankfully, this song, the title song and standout of this four-song EP, is one of the former examples. Although it was written about his late father, it has come to be regarded as expressing one of the most touching of sentiments in a love song ever. And in spite of the enormous potential for it, Gates avoids becoming mawkish in the delivery.
As with any good song, it has been covered many times. Ken Boothe did a version of it in a reggae style, while Boy George murdered it in the eighties. Still, you cant keep a good tune down.
