I have been meaning to review Papas Fritas for quite some time now and I am finally getting around to it. Buildings and Grounds starts out with a mellow track called "Girl" with a quiet male vocal not unlike Arab Strap's confessional style vocals. After you are gently lulled into that track they switch up and do a Juliana Hatfield type track ("People Say") complete with a female vocalist. As you can tell I don't have that much info on this great band but I love what I hear. Papas Fritas really remind me a lot of Arab Strap mixed with a bit of the Elephant Six sound added. Take "Vertical Lives" for instance. It's got that really poppy feel with almost a Brit Pop sound added. Buildings and Grounds go from a quiet Belle and Sebastian feel to a completely upbeat sound like Supergrass. There is even a track that sounds like Fleetwood Mac ("I Believe In Fate"). Papas Fritas aren't afraid of doing anything and they don't have a problem trading of male and female vocalists. Minty Fresh indeed with as much as variety as anyone could want.
