I had no idea what to expect from this artist called Paul Pena when it arrived in my mailbox. I had never heard of the man yet alone his music. I was in for a nice suprise. This album was originally recorded in 1973 and is now being issued by Hybrid Recordings. It features none other than Jerry Garcia among other guests. I was not aware that this was the man who was responsible for the writing of Steve Miller's hit "Jet Airliner" which can be found on this album. Paul plays a type of folk/rock that can be compared to such artists as James Taylor and Joni Mitchell but actually rocks out a little more. Originally he was mostly a blues player but grew into a greater range of styles that can be heard on New Train. At times he reminds me of Lenny Kravitz and at others he plays guitar and sings like Jimi Hendrix. Another interesting note about Paul Pena is that he was the subject of the film Genghis Blues where he went over to Asia and charmed the people with his quick learning of the very tricky art of Tuvian Throat Singing.
