Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
Pere Ubu is one of those bands that probably never planned on being as influential as they eventually became. David Thomas and his crew provide a difficult but thoroughly enjoyable band that paved the way for punk and alternative music for years to come. Terminal Tower is a compilation of their early and most important songs and makes for a perfect single album to have in an alternative music collection. Not only did Pere Ubu do all of their early music all by themselves but they did it well and without compromise. If you are completely unfamiliar with the band you should expect to hear sounds that even today have not been echoed. Some songs are very dark (like the brooding “30 Seconds Over Tokyo) and others are completely wacky (such as the silly “Lonesome Cowboy Drive). Pere Ubu was a totally original act that proved if you were / are talented that you don’t need money in order to get out to your fans. For those people who Terminal Tower is not enough, they can enjoy the Datapanik in the Year Zero complete box set that came out from Geffen in 1996.
