I had the fun of seeing this guy at the El Rey in Los Angeles while he was promoting this album. The El Rey is a smaller venue with great acoustics so it highlighted his sound and vocals tremendously.

The set begins with a cover of "Indian Summer" that is down deep bluesy. It has a gospel-like feel going in, but soon turns into a rough version of the song with his guitarist building the songs strength. "Free", the albums title tack, is your classic track the listener can relate to. "Free" is a slow start with a feel good climb. Comparable to Tom Petty's "Free Falling", with Gavin's signature piano work and growl, it keeps to a more mellow feel. The bulk of this album being a mix of blues based ballads uses lyrics in "Mountains To Move" and "Lover Be Strong" to adhere to Gavin's tendency in writing about relationship woes appealing, of course, to females worldwide.

Wrapping the list up is "Waterfalls" and "Why Do The Men Stray". The metaphorical phrasing and lounge sound of "Waterfalls" make this a bookmark for me. His vocals don't need much accompaniment for the song to fill itself out, aside from his guitarist coming in with a few riffs the vocals carry the song. Bringing up the final track with "Why Do The Men Stray" reminds you this is Gavin's loosest album thus far, relying on simple acoustic guitar stringing and an intimate sing.

Being well into his career, this album is relaxed and coffeehouse loop worthy. His guitarist adds flair when it's welcomed and Gavin DeGraw continues his method of writing and warming the song with his piano strength and wholesome tone.
