You may know Jason Schwartzman from movies such as Rushmore and Slackers but now we are about to be exposed to his true calling, a drummer in a pop-rock band. While The Guest isn't Phantom Planet's debut album (they had an album out on Geffen 1998's Phantom Planet is Missing) it is far superior and more accomplished. This group of young musicians rely on thick syropy riffs and catchy lyrical content to grab the listener and to make repeated listens a pleasure. The Planet takes power pop and wraps it up in ways never thought of before with the result of a very original sounding album. How did they get an album out on Geffen and then follow-up with an Epic release? Just listen to the Guest and you can hear exactly what the A&R rep was thinking when they signed Phantom Planet. You can't tell me that “Turn Smile Shift Repeat? is not completely Radiohead influenced. It is an awesome track that shows just what a broad influence that Phantom Planet has. I dont know if its limited edition or not but the release that I got had a 3 song EP tucked away in the back with a song called “The Guest" and live versions of their semi-hit
California" and “Do The Panic".
