In my view this was not only the ultimate powerpop single from the eighties, but was also the prototype for generations of what has since come to be called emo. The Moondogs tried and failed to crack the mainstream and always remained on the fringes of both that and the indie world, never really accepted by either. "Talking in the Canteen" was driven by twin electric guitars and backed by vocal harmonies and lyrics which screamed teenage concerns
"She turned on and I turned off the light
I told her it would be alright.
Could it be I was telling her lies?"
So says the singer as he is trying to get into the knickers of the girl he is babysitting with while his mate is upstairs with her friend. Absolutely classic stuff - show me a straight teenage boy who hasn't been in that position (or hasn't wanted to be in that position). It is a source of puzzlement to me why this never got the recognition it deserved.
