You may know Mac McCaughan as the front-man for one of indie music’s greatest legends, Superchunk, but what you should know is that Mac is a busy man. He also has this side project that he works on in his spare time, playing songs he feels don’t fit into Superchunk’s style and he also runs Merge Records. Looking For Leonard is the first soundtrack work that Mac has worked on and he felt that the music that came out of it was just in being put under the Portastatic umbrella. The movie is a low budget film set in Montreal with the cast stuck on none other than Leonard Cohen. If you have never heard Portastatic, don’t expect the loud aggressiveness of Superchunk to come out of the stereo. Think more of a tropical indie band whose fascination lies in the world of Caetano Veloso, and other Latin groups. Mac is one of those musicians that can hardly do any wrong. For the most part the Looking For Leonard soundtrack is fairly dark but there are those occasional rays of hope like the closing track “Sweethearts of the World. Portastatic has become more than a side project for Mac. It is now more of who Mac McCaughan really is and Looking For Leonard should be looked upon as more than just a soundtrack.
