Memphis Slim was a pioneer of the blues-jazz crossover style known as Jump Blues which was largely piano based and incorporated saxophones, bass and drums and was often a little more up-tempo. After moving to Chicago in 1939 he teamed up with Big Bill Broonzy and did some of his best work fronting a number of bands of the Chicago scene. "Harlem Bound" was one of a number of songs from the immediate post war period, while "Life Is Like That" not only featured Broonzy but also Sonny Boy Williamson and possibly even Willie Dixon on bass. Later in life he moved permanently to Paris and appeared in several French films before he died there in 1988.
