This is a crazy little combination; Mac McCaughan of Superchunk and Portastatic fame has teamed up with avante-garde jazz musician Ken Vandermark for a little play on some Portastatic classics and a few others. It all started when Mac was invited to perform at the Chicago Noise Pop Festival collaborating with Ken. They had so much fun that they decided to document on record what they had come up with. They invited Tim Mulvena as a percussionist and Steve Albini to produce. They chose two older Portastatic tracks (“Had and “When You Crashed), a newer one that was on the Looking For Leonard soundtrack, a Vandermark track (“Late Night Wait Around), and a brand new track entitle “Hey Salty. Nobody was really ready for what the result of this meeting would be. I am not a big Vandermark fan due to his completely random bursts of notes, which he contains somewhat here. Mac falsetto voice blends in nice to Vandermark’s sax and Tim’s percussion adds just enough extra oomph to the mix. This ends up being a very essential album for any fan of alternative rock.
