After a hiatus where the punks had briefly reclaimed music, the record companies were back in charge with a vengeance. And those of us who regretted that, stood shoulder to shoulder with the Smiths and sang along
"Hang the DJ. Hang the DJ. Hang the DJ!"
Sadly, Morrissey's words were bound to fall on deaf ears. But this song remains as a superb testimony to the ability of the Smiths to break barriers. Using a chorus of schoolkids for emphasis in this was nothing new, but the outcome was tremendous.
