"Wild Thing", like many of the great pop songs of the early and mid-sixties, had a somewhat chequered history. At the time, it was pretty common for professional songwriters to write for an indeterminate artist, only to find that the first choice artist did not make the most well known version. Chip Taylor's original was recorded by the Wild Ones in 1965 but is undoubtedly best known for this 1966 cover by the Troggs.

The Troggs made this song more aggressively sensual and, not surprisingly, ran into some trouble with it as a result. Nonetheless, it made it to number two in the UK and one higher in the US and is still their best known track. Most people would regard their version as the definitive one. Oddly, the single was originally available on two separate labels although the recording is identical.
