I wasn’t that interested in a new Pretenders album but I decided that I would give it a chance. Ignore the fact that Chrissie Hynde has been on top of the charts and fallen from grace. She still has a super-fine voice that deserves to be heard. While the Pretenders is basically a vehicle for Chrissie Hynde’s songs, there are a few tracks written by oft contributors, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Adam Seymour is back again. He has been playing with Chrissie since 1994. Loose Screw marks the first album that the Pretenders have done for an independent label (Artemis). The quality is still here and Hynde’s songwriting isn’t lacking at all. She is actually quite impressive incorporating a lot of reggae-tinged songs amongst some heavy-duty ballads like “The Losing. While this album fits the mold of AOR radio, it does have merits that should give Chrissie and her Pretenders some credibility. The musicians are strong, the songs are well written, and Chrissie’s voice is still what people pay the price for.
