There's an upside to the new reality of a digital music economy; established musicians no longer have the luxury of spending 6 months and a gazillion dollars to record a 3 minute ditty.
Gregg Allman's Low Country Blues is a great example of this. Artists have to trust their instincts and not mull over a million possibilities while spending a fortune paying for studio time.
This is Allmans first solo album in 14 years, and it was done on the fly, with 3 other musicians playing alongside him, he's made a stark and beautiful record, reminiscent of the best music he's ever recorded.
Consisting mainly of covers, many obscure to the point of practically forgotten, its clear Allman is at home with the material and his pained and soulful voice fits these songs perfectly. "Devil Got My Woman," "I Can't Be Satisfied," and "Floating Bridge" are the stand out tracks on this highly listenable collection of songs. "Devil Got My Woman" is a particularly haunted performance and you've got to wonder is the singer better off or worse for his current circumstance?
Heavy on the piano and the warm rich sound of his reliable B-3 the songs focus on groove, and not a lot of showing off. There's a lot of hand held percussion filling out the empty spaces where you'd normally hear someone from Allmans other band squeezing out a lead. The album has occasion to get dressed up with Memphis style horns, but overall it sounds as if you're lucky enough to be catching a great band in a casual setting; because you are.
