As Elton John became a more established pop artist, he started to branch away from the purely piano driven ballads of his earlier career. That was not always a good thing for it occasionally led him into some rather forgettable territory. But at heart, Elton was always a good pop artist, and Bernie Taupin could always be relied upon to turn out a good lyric. "Philadelphia Freedom" was one of those songs which I sort of grew up with as a kid. At first I loved it; then I hated it; but as I grew older I began to appreciate it for what it was, not for what I might have wanted it to be. And it is, a good fun pop song from the mid-seventies which is a tribute to the great city of Soul.
