This EP is a reissue of the 2009 debut demo by Megaton Leviathan, one that has rightly earned a degree of awe in metal-land. Megaton Leviathan have already perfected a heavy sludge tone, one that they extend in long jams that contain no filler, with a knack for wringing every drop of emotion from the simplest of riffs or from their repetition. These five tracks have poetic power.
"Water Wealth Hell on Earth" opens it up with twelve minutes of deep inner space exploration, both raw and tribal in its slow building power. A single riff becomes an epic soundscape, before tailing off into eternal echo. A brilliant effort. " The rest of the songs don't have the same classic feel, though "Repeating Patterns of Love" and "Guns and LSD" attempt, on a smaller scale, the same kind of trance-like effect.
Megaton Leviathan are well past due for a full-length. The emotional power and deliberate execution of the power and poise at their disposal may be hard to sustain over a dozen-track set, but we'll see. For now we know that they already have some mastery under their belts, and can only explore their sound more deeply going forward.
