These were great tracks from the Who. "Substitute" captures the sinister side of defeated love which the Who did so well, while "My Generation" was pretty much the theme tune of the angry and disaffected urban generation of sixties UK. Originally, it was not intended to be so, concentrating more, according to Townshend, on his fears for his adult life (he was only nineteen when he wrote it). However, by the time it came out, and rose to be the Who's first top five UK single, it had become the snarling "sod you" anthem to a generation of kids. With Entwistle's superb, and rather unique for the time, bass solo and Daltrey's stuttering vocals slowly rising in pitch and tempo, it still sounds good today.
