Bukka White was influenced by the guitar playing of men like Charlie Patton and Skip James and recorded a number of significant songs during his long career. "Black Train Blues" has one of those familiar themes of taking a train to travel far away from home while "Fixin' to Die Blues" offers a different perspective on the dying blues songs and concentrates on the bereaved left behind rather than the more traditional "my life's been hard now I'm dying" kind of theme. Both songs have been extensively covered by other artists. White himself experienced a revival in the sixties after some of his music was recorded by John Fahey.
