When this was released at the height of the hippie era in the States, it was generally assumed by those not in the know to be a reference to Lewis Carroll's classic story "Alice in Wonderland". How little the establishment knew! Jefferson Airplane were at the forefront of the drugged out hippie culture, earnestly believing that copious amounts of pharmaceuticals could enhance your consciousness and thereby bring about a change in the way the world was. Whatever the merits or otherwise of such an argument, "White Rabbit" was their biggest hit. With its militaristic drum beat and crescendo, it built to a climax that was brief but fulfilling. No surprise that this is not just the bands biggest hit but also their most memorable number. And thumbs up them for demonstrating once again how stupid the establishment is.
