If Warren Zevon is remembered for nothing else he will be remembered for this. The first thing which strikes you when you hear it is that jaunty piano line which sticks in your head long after the song has ended. So powerful a hook does that provide that many, myself included, can recall it long after hearing it only once.
Yet the song is about more than that. Zevon manages to pull off the art of being neither serious nor not-so-serious about a subject which could easily go either way. Even when Zevon makes his howling at the moon sound, he manages to tread that fine line between comedy and horror by a purely descriptive treatment of something ludicrous.
I am sure somewhere there is an interview where Zevon provides an insight into his inspiration for this song. The film "An American Werewolf in London" may well feature heavily after all, we have plenty of our own werewolves here, we don't need to import any from across the pond. But whatever the reason, Zevon created a little gem in this number.
