This is a fun release, even though not really that much of an original idea. On the Frikyiwa Collection (a name for Malian percussion music) a group of remixers were brought together and given a slew of traditional African recordings on the Cobalt label to work with. What has resulted is exactly what you would expect. A blend of old and new. Most of the remix crew is relatively unheard of in this neck of the woods but the manage to do a fine job of making the old and new sounds integrate into one. Most of the tracks all feature Malian vocalists deeply rooted in the West African traditional music. Percussion is always the highlight in all the tracks. This works quite nicely and allows the outside world to hear some of the Malian music that rarely sees the light of day.
