Rhume - Jeu De Puissance
In all intents and purposes Rhume is actually Kelp founder Jon Bartlett and Jeu De Puissance (Power Play) is his follow-up to Snack of Choice. Jeu De Puissance is an album full of entirely French indie-rock that shows off Bartlett’s songwriting talent. Where his Snack of Choice was more of a bedroom affair (lo-fi) Puissance was recorded at Little Bullhorn Studios (Julie Doiron, Wooden Stars). Don’t get turned off with the bearded guy with the Quebec Nordiques jersey on the cover because Rhume is a very talented musician. The songs differ nicely but all contain a very signature style of songwriting. I can’t help but think of Guided By Voices with some of the arrangements. You really don’t have to speak French to enjoy what Rhume has to offer. The songs rock out (“Fait Le But) or they lull you to sleep with a lullaby (“Allume Mes Levres). This is some tasty Francophone rock and roll.
