Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart first got their break into popular music as two quarters of the punk band, the Tourists. This single was their first to break through into some commercial success. Originally performed by Dusty Springfield in the early 1960s, the song was written by prolific songwriter, Mike Hawker, but was given the new wave makeover by Stewart and Lennox here.
In spite of the punk bandwagon the Tourists jumped on the gain attention, Lennox and Stewart were always a pop act at heart. "I Only Want to Be with You" was still a pop song and they would not have wished it any different. Whatever tension within the band existed, Stewart and Lennox were by the time this was released a short walk away from leaving and forming the hugely successful Eurythmics.
