Caveman - Coco Beware
If you have ever seen Caveman live, then you were counting down the days for the release of their new album, CoCo Beware. I first met Caveman back in April when they were wrapping up this album (opened up for Wye Oak by the way...totally awesome), but they were shopping around for the right label and had to extend the drop date.
Named after the American professional wrestler, Koko B. Ware, CoCo Beware is a 10-song introduction to the five-piece indie rock band from New York City. The album is a short 35 minutes, but it will have your toe tapping, your head bopping, and ears begging for more of the methodical drumming and eerie vocals from lead singer Matthew Iwanusa.
The album starts out strong with "A Country's King of Dreams" and "Decide". Both songs have a catchy beat that will have you singing along after a few listens. Although most of the lyrics are simplistic (Great life to live. It's all you have to give. It's all you have to give. Great life to live.), it does make you wonder the true meaning behind Iwanusa and Co's words. Mid way through the album, the mood seems to change with "Vampirer" and "Old Friend". Although separated into two songs, they seamlessly blend together into a seven-minute story about infidelity.
CoCo Beware will have you wanting more from this band. 10 songs are not enough. It is an addiction to the melody and drums that has the listener hooked. I am looking forward to hearing more from Caveman. If you can catch them on tour, you will not be disappointed.
