El Toro De La Muerte, from Colorado Springs, recently released their debut EP, Dancer These Days. The album is named after lyrics from the title track, “Dancer”. Members, Jeff Fuller, Mike Nipp and Jay Schwan, and Ryan Spradlin have all played in bands before they came together to form El Toro De La Muerte in 2004.
The EP opens up with “Dancer”, which is one of the more memorable tracks. It is easy to find yourself rocking out to El Toro. I am already finding myself singing, “Let’s kill the lights again/ And paint the walls and glass/ Reflections/ But hey, what do I know?/ I’m just a dancer these days,” as I repeat the album.
During “Things In My Head”, it seems as if every instrument has it’s own personality and purpose in the song. The complexity is pretty beautiful. Vocally, everyone is in unison. Vocalist/Guitarist, Jeff Fuller stated that the album is “not a blatant retro throwback. It's not super futuristic. It's just rock music, but it's our own unique take on it.”
“The Chattering of Rats” may be one of the best songs off the album. It transitions smoothly into “Records”. The last half of the album gradually changes style with “God Alone” and “Animals”. It is not a bad thing. In fact it is pretty likable. Closing up the album is “Like a Ghost” and what a great track to end an EP. It is a bit different than the previous tracks. The song beings rather slow, then builds up to four minutes of rocking out.
I hope to see El Toro De La Muerta tour over to the East Coast soon. I have a feeling that one cannot fully appreciate El Toro unless they have seen them perform live. From the few videos I have seen online, it seems that they put on a fun live show.
