While Walter Schreifels isn’t a household name yet, he has provided the alt-rock world with many a great band. Starting out with the groundbreaking Gorilla Biscuits and then finding comfort in the genre-bending band Quicksand and producing such bands as CIV and Hot Water Music, he has now brought together a new group of musicians and titled the group Rival Schools. He pulled his former Gorilla Biscuits drummer, Sam Siegler in as well as Burn and Die 116’s guitarist, Ian Love. Siegler invited former CIV member, Cache Tolman in as well. The band was born and what an album they were getting ready to unleash. United By Fate is the result and it takes off where Walter’s Quicksand left off. The band manages to be as dynamic as Jawbox ever was. Capable of pulling out the stops when necessary but also very capable of quieting down. Schreifels is a master of sound dynamics and Rival Schools is the band that he was meant to lead. This is an amazing album that belongs in any hard rock fans collection.
