I am continuously in awe each time I listen to 'A Creature I Dont Know'! It is truly amazing that Laura Marling is only 21 years old and just released her THIRD album. Barely out of her teens, Marling shows off her emotionally mature lyrics, and beautiful and confident vocals in what may be the best album of the three.
She opens the album with The Muse, a rock song with country flavor driven by an upbeat violin, piano, and banjo. After the first listen to I Was Just A Card, I immediately needed to look up the lyrics. Didnt even see the night/ til I said goodbye/ til I said goodbye to him/Tonight.
The Beast - Wow. This song may be misleading at first with the soft guitars and sweet vocals, but Marling and her backup band ease into an intense dark rock session after the initial chorus. If I were to pick any song to see live, I would choose this one, undoubtedly.
Marling, with only her guitar, softens the sound with a song about an ex love in Night After Night. Sophia and All My Rage closed off the album. Both tracks seem to be playful short stories that will leave new and seasoned Laura Marling fans satisfied.
