This was a truly iconic track from the heyday of punk, although it could hardly be called a true punk track. Patti Smith was grouped with the punks because she represented a new sound, the New York CBGBs sound. Yet this was music with soul, with emotion and with feeling, and not the raw, visceral sneering of the punks. The booming drums and soaring vocals are what made this track stand out above its contemporaries. And when the Waterboys, or rather Mike Scott, wrapped this around a live performance of "The Pan Within" a few years later, it sounded even better.
