Austra is the Toronto electronic band led by classically trained singer Katie Stelmanis. Yes, I said classically trained. Stelmanis sang for the Canadian Childrens Opera at the age of ten. Though Austra is categorized as electronic, there is an opera influence in Feel It Break.
The album opens with Darken Her Horse. Trust me. Let the song play for at least 2 minutes before making any judgments. Lose It is high pitched and a perfect representation of Stelmanis talent as a singer, and the lead single Beat and the Pulse shows off her sexier side.
Stelmanis echoes out, I came so hard in your mouth/I saw the future, it was dark , in The Future. Lyrically, Austra is intriguing. The repetitive nature of the album may feel hard to get into, but it is a perfect debut for Austra. I am looking forward to hearing what is to come from them.
