This was so much of an inevitability it was almost corny. Chuck Berry's classic from the fifties, a song which carried with it that time had passed for the old masters and they ought to make way for new music, was given a makeover by a band which had a mini orchestral section. It was so obvious that, in the event, it was a surprise no one had done it before.
The song opens with the familiar strains of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony: da-da-da-daaaa. Then it blasts into the screaming guitar hook Berry so loved and blasts off. The song is as full of the energy as the original, but enough care was given to ensure that Beethoven's music was able to be woven into the fabric of the song. Never did ELO sound better.
