Joss Stone is currently the best practioner of Blue-Eyed Soul alive. Her latest CD, LP1, is pained, lovelorn, humorous, sexy and impossibly endearing all at the same time. This may be the very best release by a major artist this year.
Stone collaborated with Dave Stewart on this release, and his deft production touch is exquisite. Stones voice is front and center on this collection of songs, but clearly she enjoys the interplay with the other musicians. Karma, is a funky, organ fueled bit of fun as is Don't Start Lying to Me.
But the centerpiece of the album, Drive All Night is spare, emotionally raw and hopeful. Stone often sings as though she's merely confiding in a friend sitting across the table from her. While she's clearly appreciative of such attention, she's still unsure she's worthy of it. Musically uncluttered, Stones delivery is stunningly sexy and vulnerable at the same time.
Give this as gift to the person who's caught your eye, and they may very well drive all night just to listen to it with you.
