Before you dismiss Putumayo’s Latin Groove as just another Afro Cuban ditty take a listen to the world fusion that is happening here. Anyone who has had their ear into Latin music will know that there has been many progressions made here. Thanks to the Bueno Vista Social Club and many others Latin music is actually getting some recognition. Putumayo does a fine job with documenting some of the new Latin music that is hitting the dance floors. The first track on Latin Groove is provided by Barrio Cubano which Ronald Rubinel, a Paris-based keyboard player, fronts. The song is entitled “El Carretero� and is a fine example of the way Latin music can be fused into a more Western style dance music. Media guru’s Ozomatli are also present with their fairly big hit “ Cumbia De Los Muertos�, which again fuses Latin music with other styles such as hip-hop. A new artist called Sidestepper (Richard Blair) makes an appearance with a great track called “Linda Manigua�. This is definitely not just another Latin compilation. Putumayo has done a fine job showing where Latin music is headed in the future. There is room for great beats in almost any style of music.
