This unjustly overlooked singer/songwriter is upon us with his third full-length album and he has yet to gain the recognition he deserves. Josh Rouse hit the market with a little gem in 1998 with an album cleverly entitled Dressed Up Like Nebraska with the catchiest title track in the history of songwriters (as I hum a few bars). He then collaborated with Lambchop's Kurt Wagner on Chester, a very understated album that has many gems on it. 2000 brought Josh Rouse Home proving that there really is no limit to his talents. The year is 2002 and Rouse has released another brilliant album entitled Under Cold Blue Stars that hits the listener in all the warm and fuzzy places possible even with the dark lyrical content. No matter what Josh sings about or how he arranges the music it just sounds gloriously fresh and pleasing. Josh's day will come to him. His case is just a matter of his music getting out to the masses. There is no reason why the masses who flocked to Pete Yorn for solace would get as much, if not more, out of Josh Rouse's music. Under Cold Blue Stars is his best performance yet.
