Robert Wilkins was an ordained minister and changed the words of many of the songs which he sang to become more devout, often with Biblical themes. Alarmed at the debauchery of gigs he played, he even gave up blues and began to sing gospel for a while. In that regard he walked a path very similar to that of Son House, one of the greatest of all delta bluesmen. "Get Away Blues" was one of his earliest recordings, but to me "I'll Go with her Blues" is the better track, a typical lament of the death of a beloved woman whom Wilkins remains firmly devoted to. At least that is its face value - in reality it is as much about Jesus as any woman. Lest we forget, one of the things which sustained many blacks in the face of oppression, discrimination and grinding poverty was faith, as much a part of the blues as any song about women, or whiskey.
