I have never been a fan of so-called pop-punk and consequently never a fan of Green Day. Pop-punk has always seemed to me to betray the whole point of seventies punk, but maybe I have a jaundiced view. So when Green Day came out with an openly Political album in "American Idiot" I pretty much assumed the worst.
I cant say much for the sentiments of this song it is not something that has not been done a hundred, nay a thousand times before, but there can be no doubt that this track is great. Take the quiet-loud-quiet formula and amplify it by contrasting acoustic with electric guitars for effect. What really makes this album though is the drumming. I doubt that Green Day's drummer would ever stand alongside the greats, but on this he has managed to pitch his ability spot on. Take away those thumping drums and crashing cymbals and the song wouldn't be half what it is. The only thing which spoils it for me is that really weak ending.
